National year round daylight saving time is reinstated in the United States of America in an attempt to conserve energy.

USS Lafayette, formerly luxury liner SS Normandie of France, which was impounded by the United States in 1941 of May catches fire during a conversion into troop transport; it capsizes at midnight in New York Harbor.

German aircraft damages British cruiser HMS Cleopatra west of Malta in the Mediterranean Sea; in addition the British destroyer HMS Farndale is damaged off the coast of Egypt, also by the German Luftwaffe. The Kriegsmarine (Navy) would also have victory just after 0000 hours: German U-654 attacked Allied convoy ON-60 450 miles east of Cape Race, Newfoundland, damaging Free French corvette Alysse, killing 36 of 70; at 2020 U-85 would also strike, sinking British ship Empire Fusilier, killing 9 (38 survived).
